Future Directions & Help

Update from Sachin Garg Jan. 22, 2014

Hi all,

I hope that the New Year is off to a good start for all of you.
This semester we plan to move forward with GMU’s Big Data initiative.
Here’s what we’ve done so far:
* Created a draft website: http://analytics.gmu.edu/ [password: mason2014]
* Submitted a letter of intent to the NSF’s Industry/University Cooperative Research program to join the “Center for Dynamic Data Analytics” led by Rutgers and SUNY-Stony Brook.
For the Spring:
* Dr. Kirk Borne is working on the on-campus Big Data festival planned for the early spring.
* We’re looking into partnering with Altamira to host the 2014 edition of theirCapture the Flag Challenge at Mason [this is confidential; please do not discuss outside of this list]
* We are looking ahead to inviting potential partners to campus in June for a Mason Big Data Open House.
To advance all of the above elements of the Big Data Initiative, we need your help. Right now, we need to identify corporations with whom we have very strong existing relationships who we should not be leaving out of initial conversations.  To make it simple to gather this data, we have set up a Google form at
http://bit.ly/MBDN_Form to gather such information.Please go to http://bit.ly/MBDN_Form and fill in the form. It is a really short form and should not take more than a few minutes of your time. You can suggest upto 3 companies on the form. If you have connects with more, then please add them in the comments section or directly reach out to me at mailto:sgarg6@gmu.edu

The idea again at this point is simply to get a list of corporations (whether in the region or based elsewhere in the country) with whom we at Mason have existing, close relationships. We are not asking for names of points of contact at moment. That can come later. But we need to know the scope of our existing relationships. Having this information is essential to our planning.
Thanks a lot for your help in keeping the Mason Big Data initiative moving.
